History of Brazil's Currency?

The Brazilian real used in the modern times was first introduced on 1st July 1994, when Itamar Franco was the president and the ministry of Finance in the hands of Rubens Ricupero, and this was part of a broader plan meant to stabilize the economy of Brazil. The currency would come in as a replacement to the cruzeiro real. At its launch, the real was equal to 1 real value unit (unidade real de valor) and it was also defined as being worth 2750 cruzeiros reais.

Consequently, this would mean one real was exactly equal to one dollar at the time of introduction. Shortly after the currency was introduced, its value shot up exceeding the U.S. dollar, and part of the reason was the large capital inflows that were witnessed between late 1994 and 1995. However, this would be followed by deterioration that began in 1999 due to the disruption that was brought about by the Russian default, consequently forcing the Central Bank of Brazil to float the exchange rate, a decision that devalued the Brazilian real to a rate of about R$2: US$1. It hit a historic low in October 2002.

###### GBP to BRL ###### The Brazilian real was originally introduced as part of the Plano real, a plan designed to stabilize the Brazilian economy, in 1994. When it was introduced, the Brazilian real was engineered to be worth 1 USD exactly, by equating the real to be worth 1 Real Value Unit, which was the value of a non-circulating currency, at a time when the Real Value unit was worth the same amount of cruzeiros reais as 1 dollar.New coins released in 2012, bear the Olympic flag and have the inscription ‘Olympic flag handover’ to commemorate the handover between London and Rio in preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games.
