The Brunei dollar, which uses the currency code BND, is a currency used in the Sultanate of Bruneir that has been in circulation since 1967. Normally, the currency is abbreviated with the $ sign, but for purposes of easily distinguishing it among other dollar-denominated currencies, it is abbreviated as B$. The currency is divided into pieces of 100 sen. According to the Currency Interchangeability Agreement that was signed in 1967, the currency can be interchanged with the Singapore dollar, and for this reason, it is recognized as a customary legal tender in Singapore. On the same note, the Singapore dollar is recognized in Brunei.
The earliest currency used in Brunei included cowrie shells and the famous bronze teapots. The country was a British protectorate and the currency used from 1906 was the Straits dollar. This was followed by a transition into the Malayan dollar in1939, which was used until 1967 when the county began using its own currency. It is the introduction of the Brunei dollar that marked an end to the Malayan dollar, and this was after the independence of Singapore and subsequent formation of Malaysia.

The notes were introduced in 1967 and came in the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100. Later in 1979, 500 and 1000 dollars notes were introduced. Different series have been issued along the years with different properties.
