Escudo coins are available in the following denominations; 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 escudo and banknotes are available in denominations of 200, 5000, 1,000, 2,000, 2,500 and 5,000 escudo.
The Cape Verdean Escudo is the currency of Cape Verde issued and circulated by the Banco de Cabo Verde. It was introduced in 1914 to replace the Cape Verdean real at the ratio of 1000 Reis: 1 escudo. The currency code for the Cape Verdean escudo is CVE while the currency symbol is $. The escudo were made up of minor units called centavos. 100 centavos made 1 escudo but the centavos have ever since been discontinued.
Cape Verde used Portuguese coins until 1930.Today, the Cape verdean escudo are available in both coins and notes. The coins are in denominations of 1,5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 escudo while the bank notes occur in denominations of 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 2500 and 5000 escudos. In 1914, 4, 5, 10, 20, and 50 centavo notes were introduced. In 1921, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 notes were issued. In 1945, all notes below 5 escudos were discontinued and the 500 escudo note was introduced. In 1953, the 5 escudo notes were withdrawn. After independence in 1975, the higher escudo denominations were issued. Due to inflation, centavo coins disappeared from circulation and the one escudo coin became the smallest denomination in circulation.
Up until independence, the Cape Verdean escudo was equal to the Portuguese escudo but later depreciated in the early years of independence. It has however remained fairly stable since the late 1980s. In 1998 following an agreement with Portugal, the CVE became pegged to the Portuguese escudo at a rate of 1 Portuguese escudo: 0.55 Cape Verdean escudo. When the Euro replaced the Portuguese escudo , the CVE became pegged to the Euro at the rate of 1euro: 110$265.
The 1 escudo coin which is the smallest denomination in circulation is not regularly available. Most prices are therefore rounded off to the nearest 5 escudo. The 1 escudo coin is also the only currency that occurs in just one topical style. All the other currencies have three variable images. In December 2004, the Baco de Cabo Verde introduced a new series of banknotes which honor prominent Cape Verdeans in the field of literature, politics and music.
