Guyanese Dollar (GYD) is the official currency of sovereign state- Guyana. It was originally used and treated as transitional unit to exchange Dutch Guilder system to British Sterling system. The history of Guyanese Dollar is no different than the currency of British West Indies as whole with one particular aspect of continued use of four pence groat coin while other territories of British West Indies had abandoned it. The other eastern Caribbean countries were then using sterling and dollar accounts
Notes and Coins-
In 1800, Guyana used British coins such as 2 and 4 pennies like other British West Indies territories.
It used dollar accounts exclusively in public and private sector whereas the other territories of British west Indies used a mix of Dollars and British pounds until 1951.
In the year 1916, Government of British Guiana first circulated the paper notes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 20 and 100 dollars.
Although 2and 4 pence coins were in use since 18th century, in 1967 coins of other denominations were circulated - 1, 5. 10, 25 and 50 cents. Now coins are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents and 1, 5, and 10 dollars.
Ppaer money production in Guyana ceased in 1942 and the local notes BWI$ notes replaced it by 1951. Further in 1965, East Caribbean Dollar (EC$) replaced BWI$ until Independence.
Guyana got its independence from United Kingdom on 26th May, 1966 and then became a republic on 23rd Feb, 1970. First private bank notes were issued by British Guiana bank and Colonial bank in 19th century and the denominations released were 5, 20 and 100 dollars.
Second series was issued in denominations of $20, $100and $500 between 1989- 1992 followed by addition of $1000 bill between 1996-1999.
New notes of $100 and $1000 bills were introduced with added safety features- notable holographic stripe along with a colourful- macaw which replaced the previous OVD patch.
Bank of Guyana has also unveiled 5000 dollar note issued on Dec, 2013.
The Guyanese dollar is usually abbreviated with a dollar sign ($) and also alternatively as G$ to differentiate from other dollar denominated currencies.
