1. History:

In 1871, the Haitian Gourde was devalued at a rate of 10 to 1. Only bank currency was issued for the second Gourde, with the Central Bank issuing banknotes of 10 and 25 Gourdes.

The Gourde was devalued again in 1872 at the rate of 300 to 1. In 1980, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti was founded and it replaced the National Bank as the currency issuing authority. A 1000 Gourdes banknote was introduced in 1999 to commemorate the anniversary of founding the national capital, Port-au-Prince. A 20 Gourdes banknote was issued in 2001 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of its national constitution. The Bank of Haiti released a series of banknotes to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Haiti.

The one, two and five Gourdes notes are no longer in circulation.
