among other notable people. Monedas and Lempiras are both used on the mainland, but only Lempiras are used in the Bay Islands of Hondurus by the merchants.
Currently, the Lempira is the only accepted local
currency in Hondurus, however,
the US dollar is also accepted at places like the tourist bay islands, the airport, tourist destinations, shops and hotels. When transacting in US dollars, change is normally given back in Lempiras. Euros, Pesos and other currencies are not accepted in the country.
The Central Bank of Hondurus is responsible for determining the rate of exchange. In the late 1980s, the rate of exchange to the dollar was 2 Lempiras. As of July 2017, the current rate of exchange to the dollar was quoted 23.45 Honduran Lempiras. The reason for the depreciation in currency has been the slow economic growth experienced in the country.
