The rupee or rupiya has been in circulation since 1947, the dissolution of the British Raj., the currency is subdivided into 100 paise, however coins in denominations of paise have not been in circulation or issued since 1994.
The currency of Pakistan is known as Pakistani Rupee or in the local form "Rupiya". Each "Rupiya" is divided into 100 paise. "Rupiya" word was used in the era of EmpireSher Shah Suri. All the notes except the 1 and 2 rupee notes has a portrait of Muhammed Ali Jinnah and writing in the Urdu language. The other side of the note has different designs in different notes and the writing is in English. The back side image for each currency notes is different. There are two different series of bank notes. One is before 2005 and the other is after 2005. Afte the year 2005, State Bank of Pakistan has issued new banknotes with new designs and more security measures.So, the old 50, 100 and 100 Rupee notes of before 2005 are in circulation as of now. Rest all old notes published before 2005 are suspended.
In the year May 1950, due to the huge amount of Hajj pilgrimage, the State Bank of Pakistan has issued a special note for easy exchange facilities in the UK. The colour of the note was dark purple. But in 1978, this note was suspended from the market and all the Hajj notes were destroyed.
The value of Pakistani rupee was pegged to the British Pound till 1982. In the year 1982, the government of General Zia Ul Haq had changed the value to managed float. At the moment, the Dollar rate for Pakistani Rupee varies from $1 = 103 to 106 Pakistani Rupee.
