Rwandan Franc is the official tender (abbreviated as RWF) of the Republic of Rwanda- a small sovereign state in East and Central Africa. The Franc was the foreign currency of Rwanda since 1916 when Belgium captured German territory and Belgian Congo- franc substituted the German East -African rupie.
Notes and Coins-
Rwanda started circulating its own franc since 1964. The Burundi and Rwanda franc were introduced and shared a currency name Burundi and Rwanda franc between 1960-1963. The German East -African rupie along with Belgian Congo franc were used before 1960 as both these regions ( Belgium and Germany ) had Rwanda as a common colony.
In 1964, coins were circulated with denominations of 1, 5 and 10 francs with 1 and 5 being struck in cupronickel and 5 francs struck in bronze. Further aluminium coin of 1 franc was introduced in 1969. followed by 2 and half franc in 1970. A reduced size 10 franc was then further circulated in 1974.
The Rawanda franc uses both bank notes and coins. Each franc is divided into santimes with denominations of 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 in banknotes and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 as coins. Now the currency is regulated by the Rwandan Central bank - Banque National, du - Rawanda
Provisional bank notes were issued in 1964 by handstampng and embossing Rwanda Burundi notes composing their original signatures and dates.
20 and 50 franc notes were changed to coins in 1977.
First 5000 franc notes were issued in 1978 and the first ever 2000 franc notes was introduced in December, 2007.
Rwanda currency had gone through several changes including 100 franc bank note replaced with a bi-metallic coin in 2008 and cancelled the legal note tender by Dec, 2009.
In September 2013, Rwanda 500 franc currency was redesigned with cow depiction and students with a computer on the other side..
In 2014,National Bank -Rawanda issued new 1000, 5000 and 2000 franc notes with revamped security features and removed the French depiction from the notes.f
Since 2012, there is a proposal of launching a standard currency in the region - a east African- Shilling for the five Eastern African Countries and is yet to be introduced
