Brief History of the Syrian Pound.
GBP to SYP
The Syrian Pound is issued by the Central Bank of Syria and it is the official currency of Syria. 1 pound is comprised of 100 qirsh. Its is important to state however, that coins in qirsh are no longer in use. The currency is abbreviated as SYP. Before the SYP became a legal render, Ottoman lira was the main currency, this was later replaced by the Egyptian Pound. After Banque de Syria was setup, the pound was introduced in 1919 and exchanged for 20 Francs (French Francs)
Coins and Notes Available The Syrian Pound is available both in coins and bank notes. The coins available are 1, 2, 3, 10 & 25 pounds. The 25 pounds is a bi-metallic coin and a bit different from other coins. Apart from the coins, the bank notes available are 50 pounds, 100 pounds, 200 pounds, 500 pounds and 1000 pounds. The latest of the bank notes were designed and made available in 2009 while the latest coins were introduced in 1996. However, only 5 pounds, 10 pounds and 25 pounds were the coins issued with latent images in 2003.
Later in 2010, Austrian banknote, designer, Rober Kalina was contracted to come up with another design of the notes. This was followed by the issuance of new designs of 500 pounds notes in August 2014 and later new 100 pound notes were issued in June 2015. Lately in 2017 new 2000 pound notes have been designed and issued with the image of President Al Assad.
Issues. The exchange rate of SYP to major world currencies such Great Britain Pound United States Dollar and the Euro suffered greatly especially after the war. As it were, Syrian travellers are only allowed to take out not more than $3000 on each flight. Also, Syrian cannot buy foreign currencies like GBP, USD, EUR from exchange companies or banks. They are therefore restricted to access from black markets which might not be a favourable business decision for them. If you carry above $3000, any excess could be confiscated.
The Syrian pound was pegged to the French franc, until 1941, when Syria was occupied by British and French forces; it was replaced with a peg to the British pound at 8.83125:1.
The Syrian pound was reissued in 2009 and new notes were printed, designed by Robert Kalina.
