Currency History for Tajikistan?
On October 30, 2000, the Tajikistani Somoni was introduced to replace the Tajikistani ruble, which was the official currency between 1995 and 2000. The replacement was implemented at a rate of 1 somoni to 1000 rubles and the currency would, therefore, be divided
into 100 diram units. The government introduced banknotes for the diram subdivisions with the launch and these were used to start the currency off. Coins came later in 2001 and the intention was to create an efficient monetary system that would gradually replace the notes. It would also be the first time circulating coins were launched in the country.

Tajikistan Coins?
Coins for the Tajikistani Somoni were officially introduced in 2001 and were issued in the denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50. The 50 diram coins were made of brass clad steel while the 2 and 5 somoni coins that appeared first in 2003 were bimetallic. The second issue of the coins was dated in 2011 and June 2012, and this offered coins including denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 dirham as well as 1 somoni.

Tajikistan Notes?
Notes also followed a similar trajectory as coins and the first issue was in 2000 with these coming in the denominations of 1, 5, 20 and 50 dirham. In 2010, there was another issue that included 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 somoni notes. Later the same year, 200 and 500 somoni notes were introduced. Somoni currently stands as the second-highest-valued currency across Central Asia.
